Dhaka-Cumilla elevated railway to shorten Chattogram route by 80km

The proposed elevated railway linking Bangladesh's capital to the port city of Chattogram through Cumilla represents a major transportation initiative aimed at improving regional connectivity and reducing travel time across the southeastern corridor. The project would eliminate approximately 80 kilometres from the current route to Chattogram, streamlining logistics and passenger movement between these economically significant centres.

The infrastructure development, estimated to cost Tk 839 billion, forms part of broader efforts to modernise Bangladesh's rail network and address growing transportation demands across the country. The elevated design is intended to minimise land acquisition challenges and environmental disruption while facilitating faster, more efficient transit compared to conventional rail corridors.

The Dhaka-Cumilla-Chattogram corridor serves as a critical economic artery for Bangladesh, connecting the capital's commercial hub with the major seaport and industrial zones in Chattogram. Enhanced rail connectivity through this route could boost inter-city freight movement, reduce road congestion, and support industrial development in the region.

The project reflects the government's commitment to expanding high-speed rail infrastructure and improving transport links vital to economic growth. However, detailed implementation timelines and project milestones have yet to be formally announced, with stakeholders anticipating further updates on feasibility studies and construction schedules.
