Dhaka set to roll out colour-coded e-rickshaws across eight zones

Dhaka is moving forward with plans to deploy colour-coded electric rickshaws across eight designated zones within the city, marking a significant step in the capital's push toward sustainable urban transport. Each zone will be assigned a distinct colour to help passengers identify vehicles serving their respective areas and improve route organisation across the sprawling metropolis.

The scheme represents an effort to bring greater structure and regulation to Dhaka's e-rickshaw sector, which has grown rapidly over recent years as an alternative to traditional transport modes. By dividing the city into colour-coded operational zones, authorities aim to streamline services and reduce congestion in key areas.

According to transport officials, the initial phase of implementation will not require e-rickshaw operators to hold formal driver licenses, a decision likely designed to facilitate faster rollout and wider operator participation. However, this arrangement may be subject to review as the system becomes operational.

The colour-coded zoning system is expected to enhance passenger experience by making it easier to identify which e-rickshaws operate in specific areas. Officials have indicated that the eight-zone framework will cover major sections of Dhaka, though specific zone boundaries and colour assignments remain under finalisation.
