Digital medical records slash wait times in Perlis pilot programme
Over 86 per cent of patients in Perlis are being seen by healthcare providers within one hour under a new Electronic Medical Record system pilot, according to health officials. The initiative aims to streamline patient care across the northern state's health facilities.

The pilot Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system has demonstrated significant efficiency gains in Perlis, with preliminary results showing that the vast majority of patients experience substantially reduced waiting times at health facilities.
Under the National Digital Health initiative, the EMR system enables healthcare providers to access comprehensive patient medical histories instantly, reducing administrative delays and improving clinical decision-making. The technology integrates patient data across multiple touchpoints, allowing doctors and nurses to view relevant medical information without manual record retrieval.
State health authorities have attributed the improvement in patient flow to the digitalisation of records previously maintained in paper format. The system has proven particularly effective in reducing bottlenecks during peak hours at health clinics and outpatient departments across Perlis.
The successful pilot in Perlis is expected to inform the rollout of digital medical records across other Malaysian states as part of the broader healthcare digitalisation agenda. Officials indicate that the system also reduces errors related to illegible handwriting and misplaced patient files, contributing to improved safety outcomes.
Health ministry representatives have indicated that the pilot programme will continue to be monitored and refined before wider implementation across the nation's public healthcare system.
