The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is moving to strengthen school security by establishing outposts for barangay tanods (village watchmen) on campus grounds. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced the initiative during a Wednesday briefing at Camp Crame, indicating the move was prompted by recent security concerns, including a shooting incident in Zamboanga.
The proposal will be formally documented through a memorandum circular to be jointly signed by the DILG and the Department of Education (DepEd). Officials stated the measure aims to create a visible security presence in educational institutions and provide rapid response capability to any threats or emergencies occurring within school premises.
The initiative represents an effort to coordinate efforts between local government units and educational authorities in safeguarding students and school personnel. Barangay tanods, who serve as community peace officers at the grassroots level, would be tasked with patrolling school grounds and assisting in emergency response procedures.
The proposal is expected to be implemented in coordination with existing school security protocols and local government oversight structures. Details regarding the scope of the initiative, training requirements, and timeline for implementation are anticipated to be clarified through the formal memorandum circular.
