Dinosaur fossils reveal T. rex maintained warm human-like body temperature

Scientists examining fossilized teeth from Tyrannosaurus rex have uncovered evidence suggesting the massive predator maintained a relatively constant, warm body temperature similar to that of humans—around 37 degrees Celsius. The findings challenge long-standing assumptions about dinosaur physiology and indicate that T. rex was a fully warm-blooded, or endothermic, creature rather than relying on environmental heat sources to regulate body temperature.

Researchers analyzed chemical isotopes preserved in tooth enamel from multiple specimens, using the isotopic signatures as a proxy for internal body temperature during the dinosaur's lifetime. The consistency of readings across different individuals and specimens strengthened the conclusion that warm-bloodedness was characteristic of the species, not a temporary physiological state.

The implications of this research are significant for paleontology. A warm-blooded metabolism would have enabled T. rex to maintain high activity levels, pursue prey with sustained energy, and inhabit diverse environments regardless of climate fluctuations. This metabolic capability likely contributed to the predator's apex status during the Late Cretaceous period.

The study adds to mounting evidence that many dinosaurs, particularly large theropods, possessed metabolic systems far more sophisticated than previously believed. Experts suggest that understanding dinosaur thermoregulation provides crucial insights into how these creatures achieved their dominance across millions of years before their extinction approximately 66 million years ago.
