Direct tax collections surge 13% to ₹12.12 trillion through mid-September
India's net direct tax mopup has climbed to ₹12.12 trillion in the fiscal year so far, buoyed by robust corporate tax and securities transaction tax collections. The growth trajectory, however, has been tempered by a significant spike in refunds issued to taxpayers.

Direct tax revenues have maintained strong momentum, registering a 13% year-on-year increase as collections reached ₹12.12 trillion by September 17. The uptick reflects improved compliance and economic activity, with corporate tax and securities transaction tax (STT) emerging as key growth drivers during the period.
Corporate tax collections have shown particular resilience, benefiting from steady earnings across India's business sector. STT revenues, driven by heightened market activity and trading volumes, have also contributed meaningfully to the overall increase. Together, these two segments have powered the overall growth in direct tax receipts during the ongoing fiscal year.
However, the net growth has been partially offset by a sharp rise in refunds processed by tax authorities. The elevated refund outgo reflects increased claims filed by taxpayers, including advance tax adjustments and other legitimate tax reliefs. This development underscores the broader tax administration dynamics as the government balances collections with legitimate refund obligations.
The 13% expansion in direct tax mopup comes as the government continues efforts to widen the tax base and enhance compliance. The current trajectory suggests sustained momentum in tax collections, though officials will be monitoring whether the refund uptick moderates in the coming months.
