Director Santoshi Claims Akshay Kumar, Karan Johar Blocked His Film Project

Rajkumar Santoshi, director of the 1997 partition drama 'Partition', has publicly stated that he was forced to abandon a film project based on the Battle of Saragarhi due to external pressures. According to the filmmaker, his plans to develop the historical war drama could not proceed because of involvement by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and filmmaker Karan Johar.

The Battle of Saragarhi, fought in 1897 between Indian soldiers and Afghan forces on the India-Afghanistan border, has been the subject of significant creative interest in recent years. Santoshi's revelation suggests that multiple filmmakers may have been simultaneously developing projects on the same historical event, leading to competitive pressures within the industry.

Santoshi's allegations highlight ongoing concerns within Indian cinema regarding the concentration of power among established producers and stars, and their ability to control which projects reach production. The director's comments reflect frustrations that have occasionally surfaced among filmmakers regarding access to backing and distribution for historical and patriotic content.
