Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday stressed the importance of dissent as a cornerstone of democratic governance, asserting that differing opinions must be respected within the framework of India's constitutional democracy.
Birla made the comments while inaugurating the 'Janpratinidhi Sammelan' (Public Representatives' Conference) organised by the Haryana Legislative Assembly in Panchkula. The event was held as part of 'Samvidhan Pakhwada' (Constitution Fortnight), a nationwide initiative to promote awareness of India's constitutional values and democratic principles.
The Lok Sabha Speaker underscored that robust debate and the expression of varied viewpoints strengthen democratic institutions rather than weaken them. He highlighted the need for elected representatives to foster an environment where all voices, including dissenting ones, are heard and valued.
The conference brought together public representatives to deliberate on constitutional matters and reinforce the significance of democratic participation at all levels of governance. The Constitution Fortnight initiative, observed annually, aims to deepen understanding of India's constitutional framework among citizens and lawmakers alike.
