DIY Guide: Fix Dripping Taps Without Calling a Plumber
A persistently dripping tap after shutting off the valve often signals a problem with internal components like washers, rubber seals, cartridges, or valves. Here's how to diagnose and repair common tap issues at home.

A leaking tap that continues to drip even when fully closed is one of the most common household plumbing issues. Rather than immediately summoning a plumber, many homeowners can identify and fix the problem themselves with basic tools and knowledge.
The culprit behind a dripping tap is typically wear and tear on internal components. Rubber washers and seals deteriorate over time and lose their ability to create a watertight seal. In modern taps, faulty cartridges or valve mechanisms may be responsible. Identifying which component has failed is the first step toward solving the problem.
Before attempting any repairs, turn off the main water supply to your home or the individual shut-off valve beneath the sink. This prevents water waste and allows you to work safely. Examine the tap closely to determine its type—whether it uses a compression mechanism, cartridge, or ball valve—as repair methods vary accordingly.
For compression taps, the washer or O-ring typically needs replacement. Remove the tap handle and packing nut, then unscrew the stem to access these components. For cartridge or ball valve taps, you may need to replace the entire cartridge or internal parts. These components are readily available at hardware stores and come with installation instructions.
If the internal mechanisms appear corroded or damaged beyond simple part replacement, professional assistance may be necessary. However, many dripping taps can be restored to full function through these basic repairs, saving both money and water in the long term.
