Bjorn Burton embarked on an ambitious construction project during pandemic lockdowns, channelling his creativity into building a fully functional roller coaster in his backyard. Working alongside his father, Burton drew inspiration from YouTube tutorials to design and construct the ride, which underwent rigorous safety testing before welcoming its first riders.
The engineering process involved meticulous planning and preparation. The pair conducted multiple safety trials using concrete bags to ensure the coaster could withstand regular use and protect riders from potential hazards. This methodical approach allowed them to refine the design and identify any structural concerns before opening the ride to the neighbourhood.
The backyard coaster became a popular attraction among local children during the lockdown period. However, as the younger residents matured and outgrew the ride, Burton decided to pass on the project to a new owner. He has listed the roller coaster for sale at NZ$4,500.
Looking ahead, Burton indicated he is already planning his next engineering venture. He envisions constructing a similar attraction in the future when he becomes a grandfather, suggesting the COVID-era project sparked a lasting passion for creative home engineering.
