Tamil Nadu's principal opposition DMK party has approved sweeping structural reforms aimed at rejuvenating its cadre, introducing strict age restrictions and tenure ceilings for party positions following electoral losses in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The DMK's executive committee, convened at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam with president M K Stalin presiding, ratified a comprehensive organisational restructuring on Saturday that signals the party's determination to modernise its functioning and expand grassroots reach.
The reform package encompasses a significant territorial expansion, with the party increasing its organisational districts from 78 to 110. The new framework will broadly align each district with two Assembly constituencies, enhancing administrative efficiency and localised decision-making capacity across Tamil Nadu.
Urban administration has undergone particularly sharp restructuring. The DMK has abolished the standalone post of city secretary in major metropolitan centers including Cobbatore and Tambaram, replacing it with a voter density-based zoning system. Under this new model, Area Committees within the Chennai Corporation will service approximately 40,000 voters each, while committees in other municipal corporations will manage around 30,000 voters per unit.
The structural changes introduce strict age caps and term limits for party positions, a measure designed to facilitate faster circulation of leadership and create advancement opportunities for younger cadre members. Party officials indicated that formal boundary maps would be released following formal approval from the party president, completing the implementation framework for the reorganisation.
