DMK MP Anbumani calls on Tamil Nadu to intensify Mekedatu dam opposition

DMK MP Anbumani Ramadoss has pressed the Tamil Nadu government to escalate its resistance to the Mekedatu dam, a contentious hydroelectric project planned by Karnataka across the Cauvery River. The medical doctor-turned-politician emphasized the need for sustained and vigorous opposition to safeguard the state's water resources and farming communities dependent on Cauvery waters. Anbumani's intervention comes amid ongoing tensions between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the interstate water-sharing dispute. The proposed dam, located downstream of the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir, has faced persistent objections from Tamil Nadu, which contends that the project would adversely impact the state's allocation of Cauvery waters and affect agricultural productivity across the delta regions. Tamil Nadu has traditionally maintained that any major water project on the Cauvery requires consensus from all riparian states and adherence to existing interstate agreements. The issue remains a politically sensitive matter in Tamil Nadu, where agricultural interests and water security form core electoral concerns.
