DMT computer systems seized in corruption probe

The Department of Motor Traffic's computer systems are now at the centre of a formal corruption investigation, with authorities beginning the process of extracting and analysing stored data. The operation marks an escalation in scrutiny of the department, which has faced mounting questions over alleged fraud and procedural violations.

The Walana Anti-Corruption Unit is spearheading the inquiry with assistance from the University of Colombo School of Computing, which is providing technical expertise to retrieve and examine digital records. The collaboration between law enforcement and academic institutions underscores the technical complexity of investigating potential wrongdoing within government IT infrastructure.

The investigation's scope encompasses allegations spanning corruption, fraud, and irregularities across DMT operations. By securing and analysing computer records, investigators aim to establish a comprehensive digital trail of transactions and communications that may shed light on the alleged misconduct.

The DMT, which oversees vehicle registration and licensing, handles significant volumes of applications and payments daily. Any systemic irregularities could potentially affect thousands of citizens and raise questions about the integrity of records maintained by the department.
