DNA testing identifies 50 victims from burned MV June Aster

Philippine authorities have identified half of the 71 remains recovered from the charred wreckage of the MV June Aster in Palawan through forensic DNA analysis. The Philippine National Police Forensic Group said the identifications were completed following comprehensive cross-matching procedures.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensic Group announced Monday that 50 of 71 remains recovered from the burned MV June Aster have been successfully identified through DNA testing and cross-matching. Brigadier General Pierre Paul Carpio, director of the PNP Forensic Group, disclosed the figures during a press briefing, indicating significant progress in the forensic investigation following the maritime disaster in Coron, Palawan.

The identification process involved comprehensive DNA analysis to match remains with available biological profiles. The announcement suggests ongoing work to identify the remaining 21 individuals recovered from the vessel, with forensic teams continuing their efforts to complete the identification process.

The MV June Aster caught fire while at sea, resulting in significant loss of life.
