MANILA — The Department of Health has established priority treatment pathways at 33 government hospitals across Metro Manila and the Cordillera Administrative Region as part of preparations for an anticipated rise in leptospirosis cases following weeks of widespread flooding.

The fast lanes will enable hospitals to quickly identify and process patients exhibiting symptoms of the bacterial infection, which spreads through contact with contaminated water and the urine of infected animals. The dedicated channels are designed to reduce wait times and ensure prompt intervention before complications develop.

Leptospirosis cases typically spike after prolonged rainfall and flooding, which create ideal conditions for the disease's transmission. The Philippines experiences seasonal outbreaks, particularly during monsoon periods when waterlogged communities face heightened exposure risks.

The DOH's hospital referral network reinforcement reflects growing concerns about disease burden in vulnerable areas. Health officials have urged residents in flood-affected regions to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms including high fever, muscle pain, headaches, and chills within two weeks of water exposure.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation and have advised the public on preventive measures, including avoiding contact with contaminated floodwaters and maintaining proper hygiene practices during recovery phases.
