The DOH emphasized that individuals who have waded through contaminated floodwaters should promptly consult healthcare providers about antibiotic prophylaxis. Officials stressed that medical consultation is warranted even for those without apparent cuts or abrasions, as the bacteria can enter the body through microscopic breaks in the skin and mucous membranes.
Leptospirosis, a potentially fatal bacterial infection spread through contact with water contaminated by animal urine, poses particular danger during flood events when sanitation systems are compromised and disease vectors proliferate.
