City prosecutors in Zamboanga City are set to begin their review of criminal charges against the father of the student who carried out a shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) last week, the Department of Justice announced.

The Philippine National Police had filed a criminal complaint against the parent following the incident at the university, which resulted in the deaths of the teenage gunman and another student. Department of Justice Undersecretary Ian Dato confirmed that prosecutors would now evaluate the charges brought forward by police.

The shooting at AdZU marked one of the latest incidents of gun violence in the country. Authorities have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack as well as questions about how the student obtained the firearm used in the incident.

The involvement of the shooter's father in the legal proceedings suggests investigators are examining potential responsibility or negligence related to access to the weapon. The DOJ evaluation will determine whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed with prosecution of the charges.
