MANILA — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued a suspension order affecting six vessels operated by Atienza Interisland Ferries as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly fire aboard MV June Aster.

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino announced the enforcement action on Monday, citing the fatal maritime incident as grounds for the operational suspension. The work stoppage order, dated October 12, was disclosed to media through official documentation released by the department.

The suspension marks a significant response by the DOLE to the shipping tragedy and reflects the government's commitment to maritime safety standards and worker protection. The action applies to the entire fleet subset operated by the ferry company pending further investigation and compliance measures.

Atienza Interisland Ferries, a major inter-island transportation operator serving Philippine waters, will be required to address outstanding safety and operational concerns before the vessels can resume commercial service. The suspension period allows authorities to conduct comprehensive reviews of safety protocols and certifications across the affected fleet.
