MANILA — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is preparing four labor advisories to address workplace safety concerns as the El Niño weather pattern threatens to bring extreme heat across the Philippines, Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino announced.
The guidelines will establish mandatory safety and health protocols for employers and workers, with particular focus on protecting those engaged in outdoor work or in facilities exposed to high temperatures. The advisories are designed to prevent heat-related illnesses and injuries as temperatures are expected to rise significantly during the El Niño period.
Tolentino did not specify a timeline for the issuance of the four advisories but emphasized the importance of proactive measures to safeguard workers' health and safety. The move reflects DOLE's commitment to ensuring workplace conditions remain compliant with labor standards during climatically challenging periods.
Employers across various industries, from agriculture to construction and manufacturing, are expected to implement the guidelines once they are issued. The advisories will likely include recommendations on work schedules, hydration protocols, rest periods, and medical support for workers affected by heat stress.
