Domestic helper jailed for assaulting elderly woman, theft from employer

Eka Yulianti Suryanto was convicted of the assault and theft offences following an incident at her employer's residence. The domestic helper, frustrated by disturbances to her sleep caused by her employer's bedridden mother, threw a bottle in anger that struck the elderly woman's face.

The assault left the victim injured, prompting authorities to investigate the incident. During their probe, investigators also uncovered that Suryanto had stolen items belonging to her employer during her period of employment.

The court found Suryanto guilty on both counts. In sentencing her, the judge emphasised the seriousness of assaulting a vulnerable elderly resident and breaching the trust placed in domestic helpers by their employers. The conviction and custodial sentence underscore Singapore's commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and holding domestic workers accountable for criminal conduct.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about workplace conduct within Singapore's domestic helper sector, which employs hundreds of thousands of foreign workers. Authorities continue to urge both employers and helpers to maintain professional standards and report any misconduct promptly.
