The Kedah Veterinary Services Department has cautioned residents against taking independent action if they suspect an animal is infected with rabies, emphasizing the importance of reporting such cases to official channels instead.
The department's warning comes in response to a recent rabies case detected in Kedah. Officials stressed that members of the public should contact the relevant authorities immediately upon encountering or suspecting an animal of carrying the disease, rather than attempting to capture, contain, or neutralize the animal themselves.
Rabies is a fatal viral disease transmissible to humans through saliva, typically via bites or scratches from infected animals. The department emphasized that direct contact with potentially infected animals poses serious health risks and that trained professionals should handle such situations.
Residents who encounter stray animals displaying unusual behaviour, excessive drooling, or aggression are advised to keep their distance and contact the Kedah Veterinary Services Department or local authorities immediately. Early reporting and professional intervention are critical in preventing the spread of the disease and protecting public health.
