Don't weaponise neighbour disputes with racial claims, warns lawyer

Sahain Nada Puthucheary has urged the public to exercise restraint when neighbourhood conflicts emerge, warning against injecting communal tensions into what may be straightforward disagreements between residents.

The lawyer highlighted the role of social media in amplifying disputes, pointing out that videos circulating on these platforms typically capture only fragments of incidents rather than their full context.

"When conflicts arise between neighbours, it is important to address them based on the actual facts and circumstances involved, rather than allowing them to be reframed through a racial or communal dimension," she said.

Her remarks come as Malaysia continues to grapple with instances of local tensions being escalated through social media, with short video clips sometimes sparking broader community concerns.

Puthucheary's warning reflects broader concerns among legal and civic experts about the potential for digital platforms to distort neighbourhood disputes into larger social flashpoints, particularly when incomplete information is widely shared.
