Dong Nai province has made significant progress in recovering the remains of war martyrs, collecting 220 sets from January through October 21, 2026, according to provincial authorities. Of these, 120 sets were recovered from Cambodia, while an additional 66 sets were found in the communes of Loc Quang, Loc Thanh, Tan Loi and Loc Ninh within Dong Nai itself.
The recovery operation underscores Vietnam's continued commitment to locating and identifying soldiers and civilians who perished during the nation's wars. These remains are typically subjected to DNA testing and forensic analysis to establish identities and enable families to conduct proper burial ceremonies.
The national steering committee on the search for martyrs' remains has approved additional members to support identification efforts nationwide. In related developments, Dien Bien province has collected 81 DNA samples to assist in identifying war casualties, while military aircraft have transported samples to Hanoi for advanced DNA identification procedures.
The cross-border recovery operations, particularly those conducted in Cambodia, represent a continuation of diplomatic cooperation between Vietnam and its neighbors in addressing the legacy of the region's conflicts. Officials say the identification process remains painstaking but essential work to bring closure to families of the fallen.
