Dong Thap intensifies fishing vessel oversight to eliminate illegal activities

Dong Thap has moved to tighten control over its fishing fleet through enhanced vessel management systems aimed at curbing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. Since the start of 2024, the province has recorded no instances of fishing vessels operating illegally in foreign waters, marking a significant improvement in compliance.

The provincial authorities have strengthened oversight mechanisms at ports and implemented coordinated inspection procedures for vessels that lose Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) signals while at sea. These measures represent part of a broader effort to ensure vessels remain compliant with maritime regulations and international fishing agreements.

The initiative in Dong Thap aligns with similar efforts across other provinces in the Mekong Delta region. Neighboring An Giang province has focused on tightening management of high-risk violators, while Khanh Hoa has mobilized additional resources to address IUU fishing concerns. Regional authorities have increasingly emphasized the need for stricter fisheries management to combat unauthorized fishing operations.

IUU fishing remains a persistent challenge for Vietnam's marine sector, with illegal activities undermining sustainable fisheries management and damaging the country's international reputation. By strengthening vessel tracking and port-based inspection systems, provinces aim to enhance transparency within the fishing industry and ensure compliance with both domestic and international maritime standards.
