Three people, including officials from Doordarshan and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), died when their vehicle careened off a mountain road and plunged into a gorge in Mizoram on Tuesday. The accident took place near a village located roughly 30 kilometres south of Aizawl, the state capital.
Rescue teams were mobilized to the accident site following reports of the vehicle going off the road. The deep gorge terrain complicated initial rescue operations, though emergency responders reached the site and retrieved the bodies of all three victims.
Initial investigations suggest the vehicle lost control while navigating the challenging mountain terrain that characterises roads in the northeastern state. Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including possible contributing factors such as road conditions and vehicle maintenance.
The incident comes amid concerns about road safety in Mizoram, where mountainous geography and often-treacherous weather conditions pose significant challenges to vehicular traffic. State authorities have indicated they will conduct a thorough review of safety protocols on critical routes in the region.
