DOTr rolls out free transport on Metro Manila routes during monsoon rains

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) launched a free public transport initiative on Wednesday to help Metro Manila residents cope with heavy rainfall from the southwest monsoon, or habagat. The move aims to ensure vulnerable populations maintain access to reliable transportation despite weather-related challenges affecting regular commuter services across the capital region.

Government-deployed vehicles have been positioned along three key routes: Divisoria to Monumento, Kalentong to Pasig, and Lawton to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), operating in both directions. The DOTr coordinated the effort with other government agencies to maximize coverage and response capacity during the inclement weather period.

The free ride program reflects growing concern about transportation accessibility during the monsoon season, when heavy downpours and flooding frequently disrupt regular bus, jeepney, and rail services across Metro Manila. Officials did not specify the duration of the initiative, though similar relief measures in the past have remained in effect while adverse weather conditions persist in the region.
