DPWH launches nationwide bridge safety inspections as monsoon rains persist

MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced inspections of critical bridge infrastructure across the country as the Philippines faces continued precipitation from the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat.

The nationwide inspection program was launched following a departmental directive issued on Tuesday, September 1, according to DPWH officials. The initiative aims to assess the structural condition and safety of major bridges as heavy monsoon rains increase the risk of flooding and water damage to critical infrastructure.

The DPWH did not immediately provide details on the scope of inspections, the number of bridges to be assessed, or the expected timeline for completion. However, the agency emphasized that the preventive maintenance effort is designed to protect both public safety and critical transportation corridors ahead of the peak monsoon period.

The southwest monsoon typically brings heavy rains to western portions of the country from June through September, creating challenging conditions for infrastructure maintenance and public works operations.
