The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) presented its case to the Metro Manila Council on Tuesday for backing a major spillway project in Parañaque that officials say would strengthen flood defenses across the metropolitan area.
DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain outlined the project's benefits during the council meeting at the MMDA building, emphasizing its potential to mitigate flooding not only in the immediate Parañaque vicinity but also throughout Metro Manila and areas surrounding Laguna de Bay.
The agency's pitch comes as the region continues grappling with seasonal flooding and seeks to upgrade its water management infrastructure. The spillway project is expected to improve drainage systems and reduce water accumulation during heavy rainfall events.
The Metro Manila Council's endorsement would represent a key step forward for the initiative, signaling support from the region's local government leaders. The council comprises the mayors and governors of constituent areas within the metropolitan zone.
