DPWH plans water detention facility at Parañaque mall to combat flooding
The Department of Public Works and Highways is exploring construction of a water detention facility at a shopping mall in Parañaque City as part of efforts to address the city's persistent flooding problems. Parañaque City Rep. Brian Yamsuan disclosed the proposal following discussions with DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon.

The flood mitigation project would utilize space at the mall to create infrastructure designed to capture and hold stormwater runoff during heavy rainfall events, reducing inundation in surrounding residential and commercial areas. Yamsuan said the proposal represents a collaborative approach to addressing drainage challenges that have long plagued the city.
The DPWH has increasingly explored unconventional solutions to Metro Manila's chronic flooding, including partnerships with private property owners to develop detention and retention facilities. The Parañaque initiative reflects broader government efforts to improve urban water management in densely populated areas where traditional drainage systems have proven inadequate.
Parañaque City, located in the southern portion of Metro Manila, has experienced recurrent flooding during the monsoon season and heavy downpours. The proposed facility would complement existing drainage infrastructure and emergency response measures already in place throughout the city.
