MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced plans Wednesday to construct a water detention basin at a park located in front of Malate Church in Manila as part of the government's ongoing flood mitigation efforts in the capital.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon disclosed the project timeline, stating that construction is expected to be completed within four to six months. The water detention basin will serve as a flood control structure designed to reduce inundation in the Malate area during heavy rainfall and storm surge events.
The project is among several infrastructure initiatives the DPWH has undertaken to address flooding challenges in Metro Manila's low-lying areas. The detention basin will capture and temporarily store excess water during peak flood periods, helping to alleviate the pressure on existing drainage systems in the densely populated district.
