BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to leverage advanced technologies to combat severe landslide and erosion problems plaguing the Cordillera region, according to Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon. The agency's commitment signals recognition that conventional methods have proven inadequate for managing the mountainous terrain's geological challenges.
"Our past practices are no longer applicable in the current context," Dizon said, emphasizing the need to abandon outdated approaches. "We cannot continue repeating the same strategies. We will introduce new technologies and methods to address these persistent problems."
The Cordillera region, spanning northern Luzon, faces recurring landslide threats during the rainy season, endangering communities, infrastructure, and economic activities. The adoption of modern engineering solutions is expected to improve slope stability monitoring, early warning systems, and structural reinforcement techniques across vulnerable areas.
The DPWH's initiative reflects growing recognition that addressing natural hazards in the Philippines requires investment in contemporary disaster mitigation infrastructure and expertise. Further details on specific technologies and implementation timelines were not immediately disclosed.
