A drone strike targeting a busy market in Abyei, the disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan, has resulted in significant casualties with confirmed deaths exceeding 150 people. The attack struck when the marketplace was at peak activity, with vendors and shoppers gathered in the commercial hub.
Abyei remains one of Africa's most volatile zones, with its status unresolved since South Sudan's independence in 2011. The region has been the flashpoint for recurring clashes between Sudanese and South Sudanese forces, as well as local armed groups competing for control of the resource-rich territory.
The marketplace bombing represents one of the deadliest single incidents recorded in the region and underscores the humanitarian toll of the protracted territorial conflict. The exact circumstances surrounding the strike, including which party was responsible for the drone operation, remain unclear.
The Abyei region, home to predominantly Dinka Ngok communities, has experienced cycles of violence and displacement for years. Previous clashes have forced thousands of civilians to flee, and the area remains under significant security challenges despite international calls for resolution of its political status.
