Dropping impeachment charges won't shield VP Duterte from accountability

An Akbayan party-list representative said on Sunday that the House prosecution panel's decision to withdraw three of the four impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte represented a legal strategy designed to accelerate resolution of the proceedings.

Rep. Perci Cendaña made the comments during an interview on a congressional affairs radio program, suggesting that streamlining the charges was intended to facilitate faster movement through the legislative process rather than weakening the overall case.

The reduction of charges from four to one does not eliminate the accountability mechanisms at play, according to Cendaña's statement. The opposition figure emphasized that the remaining article continues to carry substantive weight in the impeachment proceedings against the Vice President.

The House prosecution panel's action marks a significant development in the high-profile impeachment case, which has drawn intense scrutiny both within Congress and among the Philippine public. Political observers have characterized the decision as a calculated procedural maneuver aimed at securing swift adjudication of the complaint.
