Drug offences account for nearly half of Malaysians detained abroad

Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni revealed that drug-related charges account for a substantial portion of Malaysians currently detained overseas, highlighting a persistent challenge for the government in managing its citizens' legal troubles abroad.

As of September this year, the 1,588 drug-related detentions represent nearly half of all Malaysians held in foreign custody, according to official figures provided by the ministry. The data reflects the scope of Malaysia's involvement with international narcotics-related legal cases, spanning multiple jurisdictions across the globe.

The concentration of drug offences among detained Malaysians underscores longstanding concerns about drug trafficking networks and substance abuse within Malaysian communities, both domestically and internationally. Many of those detained face serious charges in countries with stringent drug laws, where penalties can include lengthy prison sentences or capital punishment in certain jurisdictions.

The foreign ministry's disclosure of these figures comes as authorities continue efforts to provide consular assistance to detained citizens and work through diplomatic channels to address cases where possible. The high volume of drug-related detentions has prompted ongoing discussions about public awareness campaigns and preventative measures to discourage Malaysians from involvement in narcotics trafficking and consumption abroad.
