MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) unveiled a bucket-based water filtration system on Wednesday as part of preparations for the anticipated Super El Niño weather pattern, which could bring severe drought conditions to parts of the country.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian demonstrated the portable filtration technology during a press briefing at Malacañan Palace, highlighting how the system could provide residents with access to safer drinking water during periods of water scarcity.

The filtration device represents a low-cost, accessible solution for communities that may face water supply disruptions as a result of prolonged dry conditions expected from the Super El Niño phenomenon. The DSWD has been coordinating with other government agencies to prepare disaster response and humanitarian assistance measures ahead of the weather event.

Super El Niño episodes, characterized by unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures, typically result in reduced rainfall across Southeast Asia and can trigger widespread droughts affecting agriculture, water supplies, and power generation.

The department's demonstration underscores the government's focus on pre-emptive measures to safeguard public health and ensure vulnerable populations have adequate access to clean drinking water during environmental emergencies.
