DSWD urges House to restore care facility funding in budget

MANILA — The Department of Social Welfare and Development called on the House of Representatives on Tuesday to restore funding for capital outlay projects supporting its care facilities nationwide.
During a House committee on appropriations hearing on the agency's proposed budget, DSWD officials emphasized that budget reductions could jeopardize the operational capacity and upkeep of facilities providing essential social services to vulnerable populations.
The appeal comes as lawmakers deliberate the final budget allocations for various government agencies in the coming fiscal year. DSWD manages numerous residential facilities and care centers across the country serving children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and other beneficiaries of social protection programs.
Officials stressed that adequate capital outlay funding is critical for maintaining existing infrastructure, upgrading facilities, and ensuring beneficiaries receive services in safe and adequate environments. The agency did not specify the amount of the proposed budget cuts or detailed impacts on particular facilities during the briefing.
The House committee is expected to continue its review of agency budgets in the coming weeks before submitting its final appropriations bill for legislative approval.
