Dubai nurtures coral in lagoon nurseries before ocean restoration

Dubai is undertaking an ambitious coral restoration project to revitalize marine ecosystems along its coast. Under the Dubai Reef initiative, administered by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, authorities are cultivating coral fragments in specially managed lagoon nurseries before reintroducing them to their natural habitats in the Gulf.

The Al Naseem nursery serves as the primary cultivation site, where various coral species are propagated in controlled conditions. This intermediate stage allows the young corals to develop strength and resilience before being transplanted to the open sea, significantly improving their survival rates compared to direct ocean deployment.

The programme represents a departure from conventional coral restoration approaches by leveraging Dubai's tourism infrastructure. By utilizing hotel lagoons and similar controlled environments, the initiative maximizes space efficiency while minimizing environmental disruption during the early growth phases.

The project reflects growing recognition among Gulf nations of the urgency to protect coral ecosystems, which face mounting pressure from warming ocean temperatures, pollution, and coastal development. Successful restoration of coral biodiversity could help stabilize fish populations and support the region's broader marine conservation goals.

Official figures on the total coral fragments generated and transplanted timelines were not immediately disclosed, though the initiative is expected to expand as the programme demonstrates viability across different coral species found in Arabian Gulf waters.
