Durga Puja: Ashtami falls on October 19, pandits confirm

Hindu calendar scholars have clarified that this year's Ashtami tithi, a significant date in the Durga Puja festival, will commence on October 18 at 8:27 AM and conclude on October 19 at 10:51 AM, according to the traditional lunar calendar.

Following the Udaya tithi calculation method—which determines auspicious dates based on when a tithi begins at sunrise—the observance of Maha Ashtami will take place on Monday, October 19. This date marks the eighth day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartik.

On Maha Ashtami, devotees traditionally perform the ritual of Kanya Pujan, or the worship of nine young girls representing different forms of the goddess. According to Hindu scriptures, the day is dedicated to worshipping Mahagauri, one of the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga, symbolizing purity and benevolence.

The clarification on the exact date helps devotees plan their religious observances and temple visits accordingly. Many regions across India celebrate Durga Puja with elaborate rituals and festivities during this period, with Ashtami being one of the most significant days of the nine-day festival.
