NEW YORK — The Indian diaspora in New York gathered at Times Square for the second edition of a grand Durga Puja celebration, which proceeded despite adverse weather conditions. The festival showcased traditional worship rituals alongside Mahalaya ceremonies and a diverse programme of cultural performances that reflected Bengali heritage and customs.
Indian Deputy Chief of Mission Binaya Pradhan graced the occasion with her presence, underscoring the event's significance within the Indian community abroad. The celebration highlighted India's rich cultural traditions being preserved and transmitted within the United States.
Recognition was accorded to six organisations that have devoted five decades to safeguarding Bengali traditions in America. The honour acknowledged their sustained efforts in maintaining cultural continuity and fostering community bonds among Indian Americans, particularly within the Bengali population across the region.
The gathering at Times Square demonstrated the continued vitality of Hindu festivals celebrated by expatriate communities in major American cities. Such observances serve as focal points for cultural identity and community cohesion among diaspora populations far from their ancestral homeland.
