Durga Puja Festival Commences with Maha Shashthi Celebrations

Durga Puja, one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar, officially commenced today with the observance of Maha Shashthi, the sixth day of the lunar month. The festival celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Thousands of devotees gathered at temples and specially constructed pandals throughout the region to participate in the opening day festivities. The day marks the beginning of the main worship period, with elaborate rituals and prayers scheduled to continue through the following days, culminating in Vijayadashami.

Communities have erected ornate pandals featuring intricate artistic designs and thematic decorations that showcase cultural heritage and contemporary creativity. These temporary structures serve as focal points for worship and community gatherings, attracting visitors from diverse backgrounds.

The festival period is characterized by religious ceremonies, cultural performances, and social gatherings. Traditional practices such as the lighting of oil lamps, offering of flowers, and recitation of sacred texts form the core of the celebrations, which hold deep spiritual significance for worshippers.

As the festival progresses over the next five days, additional rituals including Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami will be observed before concluding with Dussehra festivities on Vijayadashami.
