Durga Puja Pandals Draw Millions; Safety Concerns Mount Amid Crowds

The Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata have earned international recognition for their architectural creativity and cultural significance, with pandals—temporary structures housing deity installations—becoming increasingly elaborate and thematic year after year. These artistic showcases draw millions of devotees and tourists annually, transforming the city into a major destination during the festival season and contributing substantially to the region's cultural economy.

However, the spectacular growth in attendance has created significant operational challenges for festival organizers and municipal authorities. The combination of narrow passages within pandal complexes, limited entry and exit points, and surging visitor numbers during peak hours has raised serious safety concerns among administrators and public health officials.

Crowd management has emerged as a critical issue requiring coordinated planning between cultural committees, local governance bodies, and law enforcement agencies. Infrastructure limitations, including insufficient space for orderly queuing and inadequate circulation routes, can create bottlenecks that pose risks to public safety during the festive period.

Authorities have increasingly emphasized the need for structured crowd control measures, including staggered entry systems, improved signage, adequate security personnel, and emergency protocols. Several pandal organizers have begun implementing digital ticketing systems and visitor capacity limits to better regulate attendance flows during the festival's duration.

As Durga Puja's global appeal continues to rise, balancing the cultural celebration's grandeur with public safety remains a central concern for Kolkata's administrators and festival coordinators.
