DUSU traces remarkable journey from ₹150 grant to national prominence

The Delhi University Students' Union, now one of India's most closely watched student political bodies, emerged from remarkably modest origins. On August 6, 1947, the university's vice-chancellor brought a proposal before the Executive Council from students seeking to establish a formal representative union.

The Council approved the proposal in principle and tasked a committee with drafting the union's constitution and procedures. To support this nascent organization, the Council allocated a nominal grant of ₹150 to cover preliminary expenses. This allocation was formally approved in the early hours of August 15, 1947—India's independence day—marking the official launch of what would become a significant institutional player in campus politics.

From these modest beginnings, DUSU has evolved into a representative body spanning most Delhi University colleges and faculties.
