Dutch football matches face abandonment over fireworks policy

Dutch football matches will be stopped immediately if fireworks are ignited in the stands, according to a new agreement between the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), the Public Prosecution Service, and Justice and Security Minister David van Weel.

The policy represents a hardline stance on pyrotechnics at football stadiums, where fans have occasionally used fireworks to show support despite longstanding safety concerns. Under the accord, referees and match officials will have the authority to suspend or terminate matches if such incidents occur.

The agreement is designed to enhance spectator safety and maintain order at professional football venues across the Netherlands. It signals a coordinated effort between sports authorities and law enforcement to address the issue comprehensively.

The KNVB's decision follows broader European efforts to regulate fan behaviour and prevent dangerous activities at sporting events. The Dutch move is among the stricter measures implemented on the continent in response to persistent safety challenges posed by illegal pyrotechnics at matches.

The protocol is expected to be enforced across all KNVB-sanctioned competitions and will remain in effect until further notice.
