The technology relies on naturally occurring bacteria that break down organic matter present in urine, transferring electrons to electrodes in the process and creating an electrical current.

The system separates and collects urine for processing through the bio-electrochemical units, where bacterial activity powers the generation of electricity that could theoretically be used to charge electric vehicles or power office facilities.
