MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday characterized the National Bureau of Investigation's examination of alleged property misstatements in her statements of assets, liabilities and net worth as a targeted effort to obstruct her anticipated 2028 presidential campaign.
The NBI's preliminary investigation centers on discrepancies in Duterte's SALNs, official documents that public officials are required to file annually. The inquiry has expanded to include Davao City Representative Paolo Duterte, the Vice President's brother, according to initial findings.
Duterte's assertion that the investigation represents political interference comes as speculation continues regarding her intentions to seek the presidency in the next national election cycle. The Vice President has previously indicated consideration of a bid for the nation's highest office.
The NBI probe marks the latest development in an ongoing series of investigations and legal challenges involving members of the Duterte family. The agency has not publicly detailed specific findings or provided a timeline for concluding its examination of the property-related allegations.
