MANILA — House lead prosecutor Gerville "Jinky" Luistro challenged the Duterte family's carefully cultivated public image on Tuesday, pointing to documented reports of substantial real estate holdings and high-value acquisitions that appear inconsistent with their stated commitment to simple living.
Luistro, representing Batangas in the House of Representatives, argued that the family's presentation to the public as ordinary Filipinos living modestly stands in sharp contrast to evidence of multiple properties and luxury purchases attributed to family members.
"They tried to give an impression to us that they are simply a family with a simple life, but how can we reconcile that with these reports," Luistro said during proceedings on Tuesday.
The prosecutor's comments add to ongoing scrutiny of the former presidential family's finances and lifestyle. The remarks underscore tensions between the Duterte family's public messaging and reported documentation of their material acquisitions and wealth.
The Duterte family has not immediately responded to the allegations raised by Luistro during the session.
