Duterte Impeachment Prosecutors Say No Need for Additional Witnesses

MANILA — Prosecutors handling Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment case said they have decided against calling three individuals who could have provided key testimony, asserting they have already established a robust legal foundation.
Prosecution spokesperson and adviser Robert Ace Barbers said Friday that the evidentiary requirements for their case have been satisfied without the additional witnesses. The decision reflects prosecutors' confidence that the testimonies and evidence they have already presented to the impeachment court are sufficient to sustain their charges.
The three individuals identified as potential witnesses had been considered capable of delivering significant testimony in the case. However, prosecutors determined that calling them would not materially strengthen their position against the Vice President.
The impeachment trial, which began earlier this year, centers on allegations against Duterte. The prosecution's decision to forego additional witnesses suggests they believe they have presented adequate documentation and testimony to support their case before the special tribunal hearing the matter.
