The discrepancy surfaced during Duterte's impeachment trial in the Senate, where lawmakers including Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian examined financial records and asset declarations. The corporations in question showed deteriorating financial performance, yet Duterte's personal wealth statement reflected a notable upward trajectory during the same period.
The Senate inquiry focused on reconciling Duterte's increased assets with the poor financial showing of the business entities connected to her family. With no dividend income documented from these firms, the source of her wealth accumulation remained unexplained.
