Early-onset osteoporosis poses rising threat to India's younger generation

Osteoporosis, a condition characterised by weakened bones and increased fracture risk, is emerging as a significant health concern among young adults in India, departing from its traditional profile as a disease of the elderly. Medical researchers attribute this troubling shift to a combination of modern lifestyle habits, including prolonged sedentary behaviour, inadequate sun exposure, and nutritional deficiencies that compromise bone development during crucial years.

Vitamin D insufficiency has emerged as a primary culprit, with many young Indians failing to maintain adequate levels despite living in a sun-rich region. Dietary patterns increasingly lacking in calcium and other bone-supporting nutrients further exacerbate the problem. Experts emphasise that the foundation for lifelong skeletal health is established during youth, making the current generation's habits particularly consequential for future wellbeing.

Young adults are advised to remain vigilant for warning signs including unexplained back pain, gradual loss of height, and increased susceptibility to fractures from minor falls or injuries. Medical professionals recommend that individuals prioritise weight-bearing exercise, ensure sufficient dietary calcium and vitamin D intake, limit caffeine and alcohol consumption, and avoid smoking to protect bone density.

Health authorities stress that early detection and intervention during the young adult years can significantly mitigate osteoporosis risk, potentially preventing disability and complications in later life. Regular bone density screening and consultation with healthcare providers are increasingly recommended as preventive measures for at-risk populations.
