East Coast Rail Link Phase 1 ready for December launch

KUALA LUMPUR — China Communications Construction Company Limited's ECRL subsidiary has completed Phase 1 of the East Coast Rail Link project and transferred operational responsibility to project operators, positioning the railway for its anticipated December 12 commencement of service.

The handover represents a critical juncture for the RM110 billion infrastructure development, which has faced multiple delays and cost revisions since its inception. Phase 1 encompasses the initial stretch of the 665-kilometre railway corridor designed to link Port Klang in Selangor with Kota Bharu in Kelantan, significantly enhancing freight and passenger connectivity across Malaysia's east coast.

The project is expected to provide substantial economic benefits to the region by improving logistics efficiency and supporting industrial development along the corridor. The railway aims to reduce transportation costs and travel times, offering an alternative freight route to the congested west coast and reducing dependence on road transport.

Once fully operational, the ECRL is projected to handle significant cargo volumes and passenger traffic, supporting Malaysia's vision of enhanced regional integration and economic competitiveness. The December launch of Phase 1 represents a tangible step toward realising the project's broader developmental objectives.
